Look after your Heart this Valentine’s Day

As it is February, Valentine’s month, and hearts are on our minds, here is what to do if you ever think you're having a heart attack…
A heart attack is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention. Recognising the symptoms and acting quickly can save your life or the life of someone you care about. Here is what to do if you suspect you are having a heart attack.
Recognise the Symptoms
Heart attack symptoms can vary, but the most common signs include:
• Chest pain or discomfort that feels like pressure, squeezing, or fullness, often in the centre or left side of the chest.
• Pain that radiates to the shoulders, arms, back, neck, or jaw.
• Shortness of breath, even without chest pain.
• Nausea, light-headedness, or cold sweats.
Symptoms can differ between men and women. Women may experience more subtle symptoms, such as fatigue, indigestion, or back pain.
Act Immediately
If you think you’re having a heart attack:
1. Call Emergency Services - Time is critical.
If you are a Member of our Association, then immediately call us on our 24/7 telephone number 96 579 6099 and one of our Ambulances will immediately be directed to you.
If you are not a member, dial for emergency medical help immediately on 112.
Emergency responders can begin treatment on the way to the hospital, improving your chances of survival.
2. Chew Aspirin (If Advised)
If you are not allergic to aspirin and don’t have contraindications, chew and swallow a standard adult aspirin (325 mg). Aspirin can help thin your blood and improve blood flow to the heart.
3. Stay Calm and Rest
Sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Try to remain calm to reduce strain on your heart. Avoid walking or any physical exertion.
4. Avoid Driving Yourself
Even if you feel capable, do not attempt to drive to the hospital. Wait for emergency medical personnel to arrive.
Prevention and Preparedness
Knowing your risk factors, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, or a family history of heart disease, can help you take preventive steps. Regular exercise, a healthy diet, and routine medical checkups are essential for heart health.
Remember, acting fast can save lives. If in doubt, always seek medical attention. It is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your heart.
